I doubt this will help, but our original farm included servers inside
and outside our firewall. The issue we ran into is that the MOSS servers
inside and outside the firewall needed to talk to each other via various
ports opened in the Firewall. Both Microsoft and one of their gold
partners were unable to fully document and/or tell us what specific
ports were needed. Eventually, our networking folks just killed the
inside server and we moved the entire farm outside the firewall.

The database is behind the FW in our DMZ.

We had issues with that too, but were able to resolve that ourselves.
