Pros and Cons of Site Collection Per DB

Asked By: Angie    Date: Nov 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3004

One SharePoint content db can have one or more site collections. What
is the pros and cons of having one db per site collection, other than
many number of dbs?

Also can one SharePoint farm have more than one database server? I
believe the answer is no. Please correct me if I am wrong.

As I understand it, you cannot have multiple content  databases for a
single site  collection. You can, however, host your content DBs on any
servers you like, so you could for example have three site collections  on
three different SQL boxes.

The only way to control the maximum size of a content  Database is by setting
quotas at the site  Collection level. The sum of the maximum quotas to all the
site collections  in a content database  is the maximum size that the content
database can grow to. SQL won't really care how big your databases become, but
the bigger the database the longer it will take for you to backup and restore
the database in case of a problem. If your Site Collections are also designed
to parallel departmental or divisional boundaries separating Site Collections
into different databases can make it easier to back up specific departmental

So the advantage of multiple content databases is increased manageability. The
only con is the additional complexity required for managing multiple databases.

In answer  to your other question each database you create in a Farm can be
placed on a separate SQL server.

...and Microsoft reccomends no more than 100 databases per Web application. So,
most organizations can't have a 1to1 relationship for all site  collections.
