Pros and Cons of Changing the IP address of a working sharepoint

Asked By: Chase    Date: Nov 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5080

I have a request to change the IP address of an existing server.
Is it a good idea?
What are the pros and cons?
Has anyone had to do this?

I don't think that will be a problem
you need to ensure to redirect you address  to point to the new ip
address and IIS should resolved the paths on request.

Which server? What services is it supplying? changing  an IP address  of a
server is usually not a big deal as name to IP address resolution is handled
through DNS anyway. If your DNS is dynamically updated the machine will
re-record it's new address assignment with your DNS server, but it might
take a little time to replicate in your environment if you have several DNS
servers. If the server  is part of an NLB load balancer, then you would need
to make this adjustment in your NLB service or the NLB could pass requests
to the wrong address and you would end up with random connection issues.

If the address you are changing is a public IP address, then any external
DNS records need to be modified to reflect the change  and propagation of the
change could take up to 24 hours to filter across the net. (I have seen this
propagation take much less time than that, but this is the window your
service provider likes to work with.)
