Project manager collaboration

I am new at least on this topic in sharepoint 2007. I have a requirement to
generate summary report from several mpp files in sharepoint 2007 for managers
and executives. The idea is they don't want to see detail project plan for each
project. They like to see the summary of existing MPP files all in one listing
or report.
MPP files are located at SharePoint 2007. Client doesn't want to spend money on
project server but they prefer to use MOSS with some customization to achieve
this.
What is the best practice to do this? Write some code to capture required
information from MPP files and load to sharepoint list and generate report
from list or may be buying the third party product. Any feedback?
