Prohibiting file extension uploads at the document library level

Asked By: Marilyn    Date: Mar 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2296

I know it's possible to limit the file types that can be used on the
server at the administrative level via Central Administration. Can
you do that at either the site or document library levels? I want to
restrict the uploading of .doc or .docx files in a specific document
library.

I'm guessing the answer is "no", at least not without custom code.
Maybe a workflow that checks the file extension?

I would use an Event Receiver instead. It would be easier to build and
I believe more efficient. Using an Event Reciever you should be able to
intercept the addition of the item to the document  library and cancel it
with an error message before it completes.

Any clue on whether someone might have created a feature that allows
this? I'll poke around Codeplex - this is a really nonurgent request
from one of our staff, so I'm not putting that much energy into it,
since it falls under "if you can, great, otherwise, no biggie".
