Any programs better than Room Manager v1.2?

I have a basic understanding of how to design .html web sites, and my
new company has handed me their Intranet (thankfully, with the IT guy in
hand who installed it) that uses Sharepoint.

We have four sites with lots of meeting rooms and assets to manage.

I'd like to have a room manager program that allows a user to type in a
date and time and have whatever rooms are available display, rather than
having a room-driven program that forces me to check availabilities of
rooms (I want to know what's available, not what's booked).

Was looking at Room Manager v1.2. Not sure if it does this, but even if
it does, are there any other programs out there that I should look at
before blowing $2800 on Room Manager?

We use Exchange public calendars for the purpose and it works quite
well (assuming all you want is the ability to tell which room is
booked by whom for how long). We have a single calendar per room and
anyone who takes the room notes the reason and their name. This can
be done with SharePoint calendars with Office 2007 integration via
Outlook and be just as effective (personally, I'm hoping we go that
route). It works in Office 2003 as well, but you don't get the handy
two-way synchronization ability.

There is also one of the "Fantastic 40" WSS 3.0 templates dedicated to
this scenario as well if you are looking for a free-ish option.
