Programmatically determining SPS or WSS at runtime

Has anybody come up with a definitive way to tell which environment
your code is executing in? I have been using the PortalURL property of
the SPSite object. If it is empty than it "must"??? be WSS?

If anyone has other methods of checking this, I would appreciate some feedback.
