Profile information without mysites

Asked By: Coty    Date: Sep 09    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1846

I'm not sure if this is possible or not. I would like for my users to
be able to use the Search to get contact information about other
users. We currently have the MySites functionality turned off; we do
not want to allow users to have their own sites. Is there a way to
search the profiles and return information for a user profile without
having a MySite created for each user?

User Profile information  is populated by configuring the AD import in the SSP.
The only thing that MySites have to do with Profile info is to provide an
interface for users  to edit their own Profile information. Profile information
is available once imported whether MySites are enabled or not.

And also make sure you 1. have a search  content source to sps3://mysitehost/ 2.
Crawl it! 3. Verify reader permissions to profile  pages in Shared Services
Provider Admin, Personalization Services and Permissions (look in Quick Launch)

So, while you don't have to have My Sites, I do believe you must provision a My
Site Host site collection (done by default when you created  the Shared Services
Provider) to host the profiles. If your profile imports are working, then this
should be fine.
