Problem w/ file check out

Asked By: Sonny    Date: Aug 12    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 7546

Using SPS 2003.

Users are trying to check out and edit a document in a document
workspace. Everyone keeps getting the same message: "The
file "<filename>" is checked out or locked for editing by

The user in question apparently did check out and edit the document
for a long time yesterday afternoon, but she then checked it back
in. No one else could use it after she'd finished. They all got, and
continue to get, the message above.

I've already found this info online

I'm not a domain admin. Can someone in our IT department do
something to unlock the document? The user in question has already
attempted to check out and check in the document, but it isn't
releasing the lock for anyone else to use it.

We've run across this too. The only problem  is, that 10 minutes is
not really accurate. Generally speaking, when this happens to our users,
the file  is locked permanently, even though it's showing it's not checked
out, and it's been more than 10 minutes (we tried for 2 days to correct one

After lots of frustration with these lock outs happening, we basically
delete the file and re-add it back to the document library. Not a good
solution, but sometimes that's all we can do. You do lose all your history
for the document as well when you have to use this option.

This still hasn't been fixed in 2007, even in our limited pilot we've had
this happen already.

Well thanks for the info. Just curious- how often has this
happened? We are currently pushing our users to collaborate in
SharePoint instead of the file  shares, and we are trying to show
them all of these great advantages. I'd hate to have this type of
thing ruin their confidence. There are plenty of people waiting to
prove that SharePoint is not as good as the file shares.

This was the first time I've seen this particular thing happen. I am
hoping it won't happen very often.

Thanks, again, for sharing your experience. It's always nice knowing
you aren't alone, even when the solution isn't the most desirable.

It happens usually 2 or 3 times a month unfortunately. Using it for
collaboration instead of file  shares is something we still push, but we are
definitely not telling our users that we are removing all file shares for
this reason. There are some things that apparently SharePoint is not the
best solution for.

Just to give you an idea, we have about 500-600 users on our SharePoint
site, and the do use it A LOT. So considering the traffic we have we aren't
too concerned about the occasional issue like this with files.

appreciate the info! Thanks very much for taking the time to reply
and share your experience!!

We had this problem  and other similar problems intermittently for
about 6 months. We never found out exactly what caused it. However it
was only happening to certain users. Some hadn't rebooted their
machines for several months and most seemed to have lots of
unauthorized software like Yahoo messenger, browser toolbars,
screensavers, weather alerts and unauthorized software in general.
Now when anyone reports this problem we remove unauthorized software
and reboot their machine and that seems to end the problems. It's
possible they are just not reporting the problem so they can keep
their toys.
