problem opening office 2003 documents on our WSS 2003 sites

We are having a problem opening office 2003 documents on our WSS 2003
sites. Each time a user trys to edit a document they are prompted to
re-authenticate. We have verified the domain and the domain control
allow 'log on locally' but users still get prompted. I have also
tried making the URL a trusted site and I have verified we have
basic authentication turned on.

Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?

In IE, go to Trusted sites, security settings, User Authentication, Logon and select Automatically logon with current user name and password. You can also enable this under Intranet sites if you don't want to add the SharePoint server to the Trusted sites group.
