Problem of the Day

Asked By: Claude    Date: Feb 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2148

In the 'farther I go the behinder I get' category:

We have a test portal configured at http://[servername]:102/ for folks to develop requirements. In an attempt to meet a requirement to show selected items on the portal home page from team sites under the portal, I exported a web part page from a team site and then imported that web part on to the portal home page. This turned out not to be usefule since it displayed the team site in a web part on the portal home page. I deleted the web part and now the portal home page will not display. I get a 404 Error with the following showiing in the address bar:

When I take out the extra '//' in the url I get:

Value does not fall within the expected range.

I tried opening the portal home page in FrontPage and get an error:

soap:Server Exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException was thrown. An error has occurred.

I can see the portal in the Folder list and when I click on Hyperlinks and hightlight the default.aspx there are broken links. One is to the team site 'sites/sd/work priorities/Allitems.aspx' and the other links are to {$URL_Display},{$URL_New},{ddwrt:FieldSortImageUrl('Desc')},{ddwrt:FieldSortImageUrl('ASC')},and {ddwrt:FieldSortImageUrl('')}

I've checked and the default.aspx is not unghosted; i.e., the Content column in the Docs table is Null.

Any ideas on how to recover from this? All of the other areas are working fine. I gues I could create a new area and then not include the Home area in navigation.

First step in fixing this is to try removing the errant Web Part(s). In
your case, navigate to http://[servername]:102/default.aspx?contents=1
and attempt  to delete the bad Web Part.

Failing that, you will need to unghost the default.aspx page. This can
be somewhat tricky because you may not have a page  upon which to place
the Ghost Hunter Web Part from the Web Part Toolkit:

I suggest creating a document library with a Web Part Page (smart page)
as it's default content from here:

Add a page to the document library, add the Ghost Hunter Web Part to the
page, then unghost the default.aspx page.

If that fails, post again.

Sorry, no luck. I can go to
http://[servername]:102/_layouts/1033/spsviewlsts.aspx and then Create a web
part page  in the Document library but when I click Create I get the
following error:

I tried running spex.exe on the SPS server but can't get it to connect any

I got spex to connect and I can see the web  part that I think is causing the
problem. I tried dleting it in spex but get a 'Create process failed. Error:

This may or may not help. Maybe you have a web  part on the page  that you want to get rid of. Long shot, but it’s saved me before and maybe it’ll save you.

Go to the url of your normal site  and add ?contents=1 so you get a display  of all the web parts on the page. You can delete web parts that are causing grief.

So if your area or site page is

then go to

it’ll give you

And you can reset and/or delete web parts.

As I posted, I tried spex.exe and see the web  part but get an error when I try to delete it. I can navigate to everything on the portal  except to anythng the is connected to the Home area.

Have you located the Web Part in the WebPart database table in the
content database?

Yes I have found it. Can I delete it or are there other dependancies?
