Problem creating ASP.NET Website under SharePoint Web Server

Asked By: Tyson    Date: May 03    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2970

I am trying to create a web service to reside in the same
SharePoint server. In Visual Studio 2005, when I choose File -> New ->
Website and choose ASP.NET WebService as template. Then I put HTTP as
the Location and the address is something like
http://devserver/WebServices/WebSite, I got an error "Unable to create
the Web 'http://devserver/WebServices/WebSite'. Visual Web Developer
does not support creating web sites on a SharePoint Web server. See
Help for more details."

Any idea or workaround?

First create  a virtual directory in IIS under the target website; put
the physical directory in the same logical place on the file system that
the virtual directory is pointed to. Take the defaults in the Wizard.
Then try to create your HTTP project again. It's a bug in VS.NET (has
been for years) that it expects you to create new web  projects in
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ and it gets confused when they are elsewhere.

Let me know if you need step by step instructions.
