Problem in accessing site

Asked By: Nicholas    Date: Dec 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 809

I'm working in a company as app developer. Here right now I'm
working in SharePoint implementation project. The problem now is... I
installed SharePoint(ie, Windows SharePoint Service 3.0 (wss 3.0)) in
Windows Server 2003 machine. And in order to access that site, I
use 'http://vmdev1/........' Here 'vmde1' is the virtual server name,
that is where I installed this WSS 3.0. Now my problem is ... I want
to create a alternate URL, so that all employees in this company can
access this site. There's a option in this s/w and that is 'Alternate
Access Mapping'. I also created the mapping URL and that
is 'http://wss-dev.amnet.com' (intranet site). Before doing this I
went into 'IIS Manager' and I created a 'Host Header Value' for
that. To do that I followed these steps:
1. IIS Manager
2. In the left hand side of the IIS manager window I clicked my
virtual server name(ie., vmdev1)
3. Then under that I clicked 'Websites' folder
4. under that I clicked my sharepoint site
5. And I right clicked my sharepoint site's propeties and the
advanced button in that.
6. There i added IP address for that site and host header value (ie.,
7. And then clicked ok.

I did all these but still I couldn't able to access the site.
Do I want to do anything before that? please let me know if i want to
anything before that. Please be more clear. I'm frustrated.'

PS: I didn't create any DNS or anything before. If i want to anything
please let know and please write it in steps.

You need to add to dns In windows  dns its something like
Open dns Drill down to the zone (domain.com) where you want to add the address Make sure you double click the domain to activate it
Right click the domain and choose add new (A) Host
Its something like that and intuitive enough that you should be able to work it out if you go there

You need to have DNS entry for that new alternate URL.
