I have a problem. I tried to take backup of the sharepoint
site using stsadm.exe and while restoring back, my site is not working
because as per the error message there's the problem with the settings
of the configuration database. I tried doing the same with
smigrate.exe (FrontPage default option) but the problem still
persists. I am new to this technology. So, can anyone help me in
understanding where I went wrong?

Another problem: Due to some settings problem in the IIS (i
suspect) all my sharepoint sites cannot extract content from the
wss_content. But the default pages are coming. The icons, content etc
are missing. How do I help myself with this situation? Any suggestions
please as I need to deliver a website (project) soon.

Without seeing the error, it is very difficult to give you any specific
help. Can you post the exact error  message you're receiving?

If I type http://ip-address (domain name)/ in the address
bar, I get a login screen and after feeding in the values I get the
page I forwarded to you ie; the error  message screen. But if I type
http://ip-address (domain name)/default.aspx, the sharepoint  toplevel
site page displays but the icons  are gone and none of the site  content
is present. Same story repeats for the rest of the site. Is this a
sharepoint problem  or an IIS settings  problem (I mean site
configuration and content database  settings issue)?

trusted IE zones.

1.Browse to a site  hosted by the server that you want to add to the Local intranet list.

2.On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3.Click the Security tab, and then click the Local Intranet zone.

4.Click Sites.

5.Click Advanced.

6.Enter the URL of the site hosted by the server, and then click Add.
