Presence information in SharePoint

We are running MOSS 2007 and wanting to know if Live Communication
Server (LCS or the new version OCS) is required to show presence
information in SharePoint. Or does SharePoint have it's own capability
for this? This is for internal users only.

Either LCS/OCS or Live Messenger is required - MOSS/WSS does not have
any built-in presence  server capabilities.

Name.dll that is included with office I believe is the engine that runs

The additional functionality with LCS is pretty cool

Does anybody know how to take the presence  icon activex control and
provide this data to sharepoint  columns?

That dll may contain the control, but it needs to have a server to
connect to for the information. There is nothing in MOSS to serve as
the presence  information source, it only displays it.

Technically MOSS doesn't even do that much -- presence  status is managed
and controlled by your IM client (Communicator/WLM/MSN Msgr). All
SharePoint does is to inject appropriate tags in the page, which when
rendered (client-side) use the Office.dll component mentioned above to
access presence status. Nothing about the status gets sent back to the
