Pre-Populate Data

Asked By: Tracey    Date: Apr 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2656

I have a situation where I would want to create Tasks from Defects list.
Like, having a button to create a Task for the entered defect. So, when the Lead
of the module clicks the button, then should be taken to a new Task form with
couple of data PRE-POPULATED from the Defects list. Is this possible to do it
with WSS 3.0 environment?

Yes this is possible.
You can create  a worklow using SharePoint Designer and attach it to
the Defects list. You can set it up so that Whenever a New Defect is
created the workflow is automatically launched. Within the workflow
you can have a form  pop up for the user to complete and then populate
the Tasks list.

But, I was looking for a way where the lead wants to create  a Task only if they
feel so.
Meaning, if they are viewing the Defect in the
/Lists/Defects/DispForm.aspx?ID=1234, i will incorporate a Button in that page
which allows the Lead to click it and take them to /Lists/Tasks/NewForm.aspx
Here in the Tasks NewForm.aspx, couple of data  fields from the Defects list
should be prepopulated so that they do not have the overhead of re-entering all
the data.
Can this be accomplished?

The same workflow idea should work, just make it manual instead of
automatic, and have the workflow pull values from the original list.
