Possible to split mysites portal wss sites?

Asked By: Tyler    Date: May 31    Category: MOSS    Views: 1221

Is there any reason why Portal, Mysites and WSS sites have to be all
together? this seems to be the out of the box way for sharepoint 2003.
however in 2007,

is it possible to have separately:
a portal site collection
a mysites site collection(s)
a wss site collection

which all share the same SSP and each with their own dns entry like
wss.xyz.com, mysites.xyz.com, portal.xyz.com ?

We're thinking of migrating our sharepoint 2003 in 3 separate stages,
and was wondering if splitting them up was not recommended or if
problems would occur down the line.

Better yet, has anyone done this and is happy with the results?

You can certainly have multiple web applications; one hosting your My
Sites, one for your collaboration content, one for portals, etc. I don't
know how that would work trying to move them as part of an upgrade
though. I've only done WSS upgrades, but I'm guessing that the SPS >
MOSS upgrade is going to try to keep things in the same location.
