Is it possible to create meeting request?

I've heard people saying that we can't send out meeting request / event invitation from sharepoint.
But that would beat the purpose of the purpose of MS' collaborative software, right?

anyway, is there a way to somehow sync the calendar from outlook and the sharepoint so at least people could still access it and send out meeting request from their outlook client?

or if there's another suggestion?

I think you can try to:
1) Create a new people or group type column with allowing multiple values.
2) Create a workflow to send emails to the users in the new column when adding or updating items.

For the step 1:
1. Go to Your calendar list > settings > list settings page
2. Click create column in column section to create column page
3. Select person or group in name and type section
4. Select yes for allow multiple selections part in additional column settings section
5. Select ok
