Portal Search returns no results - "Could not Connect to the server.

Asked By: Chase    Date: Apr 03    Category: MOSS    Views: 964

I have a SharePoint 2007 portal that users successfully access. The
server is behind an ISA firewall. On this portal, search does not
return anything because the portal can't be crawled. Central
Administration says: "Could not Connect to the server. Please make
sure the site is accessable." I can't browse the site from the
server itself. The site has a single host header and uses port 80.

What I need, I think, is something like a second host header record
that will allow browsing locally on the server then configure search
to craw it. We tried doing this and couldn't get it to work. We
found that the browse attempt actually tried to go through the
firewall again, denying the connection. We don't know if we can't
configure the ISA firewall correctly or SharePoint has a hand in it.

One thing I haven't tried and I'm not sure how to configure, is to
create an Alternate Access Mapping to the second host header.

Can anyone provide any tips here?

Rather than attempting to modify your firewall settings, try just adding
a hosts file entry to force the URL to resolve to the local machine
rather than the DNS stored IP for the firewall.

Why not create a rule that specifies source traffic, and locks down all else?

It only makes sense that you button up the surface of the machine but you have
to expose sharepoint  to it.

No?
