Portal search not working

I have set up a portal that the "search" does not seem
to work.
I cannot return any results on anything that I search for.
At the same time there is a WSS site created within the portal which the
"search" for that site works fine.
It would be appreciated if someone can provide some guidance on this
issue.

Send back your error messages from portal server. WSS uses a different indexing
engine..........

I cannot find any error messages.
Is there a specific area I should be looking into.
For example there is nothing in our logs in the event viewer in IIS.

Look in the SharePoint logs.............and if there is nothing there, then
increase the verbosity of the logging to help capture additional information.

Check to ensure that the sites in the Manage Sites to be Crawled list are set to
crawl and that the default content source is crawling the local farm.
