Portal Search Indexing Permissions

Asked By: Heath    Date: Dec 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 729

We have a very large file share repository (several hundred GB) that we have been indexing with SharePoint Portal. It takes a few days to index all of this information, as some of it can be quite complex (drawings, zip files, msg files, etc). If I understand correctly, when the server creates the index it stores information about the permissions for each file as well as the full-text indexing of it. This permission information appears to break out the members of domain groups, and stores individual user access information for the files. If we want to add someone to be able to search these indexes, we either add them to a group that has permissions to read that file share, or add them individually to the top folder, and push permissions down the tree. However, each time we do that we have to do a full crawl on the entire file share, which again takes days before the user can actually use the search. The contents of the share do not change, only the permissions change.

Is there a way that the indexer can ignore saving the permissions for each file and allow anyone who is allowed onto the Portal site to see the full results of the index?
