Portal Search - Boolean Searching

Does anyone know how to support Boolean and wildcard searching in SharePoint Portal? I've looked at the following sample on GotDotNet, but there seems to be a lot missing as the webpart doesn't support sorting, grouping, AlertMe, Add to my links, etc..

The MSD2D article below explains how to enable wildcard search  but
the reviewers seem to have mixed opinions on how well it works.

From what I have read, enabling boolean  search requires custom code.
