Portal Navigation

What do most people do for navigation of the SharePoint Portal Server,
when it is used for a large corporate portal?

The requirements are to do deep dives into specific content/activities
using a fly out navigational tree.

I don't see this as OOB features of SharePoint Portal Server, but
rather a custom web part. Anyone else have experiance with this?

I have deployed corasworks to assist some clients with
site and list navigation. However, it works well but costs
over $10,000 USD.

While 10$ K might sound a lot consider that you would have to pay your
developers about 2 weeks pay to build something like that. If you think you
can come up with something like that (along with long-time support) and be
ahead then by all means go for it. I prefer to just sit back and let someone
else take care of support for something so 10$ K would be a small fee to pay
to have that comfort.

The price being discussed is probably a per server  price for CorasWorks Suite, not just the navigation  web part. Individual web  parts tend to run about $1500, as I recall.

There are other vendors available for navigation web parts. Have a look at these:
