Is this new web  application in the same farm?

Spreading SharePoint out across a WAN connection is unsupported. The latency
is often too great for the needed connectivity between services. By saying
"remote server" I'm going to assume that the web  application is on a server
in location while the SSP is sitting on a server  in another location. This
being the case, what you are doing won't work and you would need to either
build a second farm in the location of the web application, or move the web
application to where the SSP is and access them from across the WAN.

The performance threshold to be concerned about is latency -
specifically SharePoint wants 1ms or less between all farm components.
