Picture Library Questions

Asked By: Keaton    Date: Nov 22    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 4037

We have a picture library in an area that has multiple folders for various events. We have 2 issues:

First, when viewing a slide show from within any folder, the slide show defaults to all images in all folders within the library

Second, is there a way to change the folder icons in the library to other images? Say a stop sign for the Traffic events folder?

Before I go into my speil deal about topic #1, let me address what I know from my own experience in regards to topic #2.

You cannot change  the icons  of the folders  within a library  as far as I know, without changing them in the site definition and then you couldn't change it for one vs. the other... that change would occur globally. That's as much as I know, maybe someone else knows a way to accomplish that and I invite them to reply, because I would be curious just the same.

Okay now for topic #1...

I for one am NOT a fan of creating folders within ANY type of libraries. I will tell you why my personal view on this subject is so... my number one reason is: It limits your ability to display data in a format that you want, such as what is happening to you.

You could do soooo much more using metadata to your documentation/pictures. Create a field called "Category" or "Type" and when your users upload a picture  or document, they choose that category/type. Now you have a powerful way to create custom views for that data that you can facilitate the usability of your team site/portal with. You cannot create views from folders in a library, at least to my knowledge.

In my opinion it would be better for you to move the pictures of that library into the main folder  and assigning a metadata field, then creating custom views for each of those categories/types that you can display in slideshow view.... yes I know that's a lot of work. The other option is to create separate image libraries for each "type" of picture; still a lot of work. The default slideshow view will always display ALL ITEMS if you do not assign it different views.

That's just MY opinion and other people may have better methodologies or options for you...

In a related question...

.ico files.??

I did ok changing (adding) the pdf icon to my site so it shows up
whenever an acrobat reader file is present. But why do so many web
parts give you the option of picking a specific .ico (large and small)
and don't display them when the web part? Is there somewhere to turn
that on that I am not seeing? Or is this in the site definitions?

(I'm looking at a Content Editor Web Part on an SPS sub area,
Modify>Advanced:
Icon File (Large)
Icon File (Small)

??

One out of the box limitation to the wss security model described here is if you
have integrated LCS. Your presence gumdrops in some of the webparts is rendered
useless.

You cannot display presence info of "groups", just users.

There are definately work  arounds to this as the presence code to extend it
programmatically is fairly straightforward.

It is an out-of-box drawback none the less and one you shoud be aware of if you
are using or planning on LCS in your environment.
