Personalized home page vs. My Site

I'm looking for some different perspectives and practices regarding
the use of the Portal home page. We have a wide variety of people
visiting the site that require information tailored to them -- they
come from different locations, have different information needs,
etc. ... they are all members of the portal, but in many different

It's been recommended that we use My Site and route everyone there
as a personalized home page, and use the default page as
the "unpersonalized" version. Considering how much information we
need to deliver to them, I'm not sure that's the best use of My Site
over the long-term.

But I'm having trouble getting a handle on how much of a
personalized default home page I can give them, although I have all
the information I need when they arrive at the site. I"m curious if
I can serve up alternate "personalized" versions of the default
page, or if I must go with My Site, which actually takes them a
click away from the portal's primary navigation.
