Person or group field in a datasheet view

Asked By: Marilyn    Date: Oct 28    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 7987

Does anyone have any experience with creating a custom list that
includes "Person or Group" fields? I have found that they work very
well a "New" form, but they do not function properly in a datasheet
view. In fact, they appear to be useless in a datasheet view for data
entry.

In datasheet view, the field will only allow entries that appear
somewhere in the same list. When I attempt to add a new user to an
existing item or a new item at the bottom of the datasheet view, the
following message appears:

"The text entered for User isn't an item from the list. Select an
item from the list, or enter text that matches one of the listed
items".

The items on the dropdown list appear to be all names appearing in
any person field in the current list plus names from SharePoint
groups defined on the server.

I can switch to the standard "All Items" html view, then hit the edit
link for that item, and enter the new user in the edit form. From
that point on, I can use that user on the list in datasheet view. In
all cases, the users I am attempting to add are exact matches to AD
user entries.

The field in this case was named "User" was defined as a "Person or
Group" field type and configured for "All Users".

This is particulary troublesome when the field is configured to
require a value. It makes it impossible to enter any data in
datasheet view if the person you need is not on the list. I have also
run into a situation where *no* items appear on the list. If the
field resuires a value and there are no items on the list, Catch-22!
(this occurs when the person field is a site column that is part of a
content type that is defined on a list).

The Geat and Powerful Google knows nothing about this problem which
either means that no one has tried it yet (doubtful) or something
fundamental is wrong with my server or desktop configuration.

So, if "Person or Group" work for you in datasheet view, I'd like to
hear about it, and any ideas you might have related to this problem.

We experienced the same issue with adding people to a custom  list in
Datasheet view  ... the field  would only allow entries  if the user
appeared elsewhere on the list.

1) Has anyone found  a solution to this "problem".
2) Is it possible to adjust the column width in a standard list  view?
3) Can you filter a summary view  of a calendar list by start date?
(i.e. we only want to display the events for the next 2 weeks on the
web part view)
