Persistently gives documemt modified dialog

Asked By: Loren    Date: Jun 14    Category: MOSS    Views: 1469

All of a sudden a MOSS 2007 portal is exhibiting strange behavior whenever
someone tries to open a Word document. Instead of just opening the document,
users get a dialog saying:
"The document has been modified. Do you want to save changes?"
Uses then have to choose "No" to get past it. They don't know why the document
appears to be in a "modified" state. This behavior has just begun happening

Any thoughts on what conditions might cause an erroneous "modified" state or how
to track this down?

Just shooting in the dark here, but have you restored from backup or
made any other system-wide changes recently? Could it be something as
simple as the server clock being altered?

Upon further investigation it appears to be
related to using pre-2007 Office documents with embedded unclicked hyperlinks.
As far as we can tell from experimentation it is somehow related to the smart
tags added by SharePoint when the document is uploaded. We got around the
problem by converting certain of the affected docs to PDF for display, since we
couldn't get the behavior to stop for all of the documents. Since the problem
started suddenly, it appears to be an unanticipated effect of a patch.

If anyone else runs into this, I'm sorry I can't offer a complete analysis of
the root cause, but it does appear to be Office doc version related, and that
fact might help you find your own workaround. We could not reproduce it with
Office 2007 or non-Office docs.

This is starting to look like an Office (Web interface) issue rather than
specifically SharePoint. We're investigating the possibility that it has
something to do with smart tags being created behind the scenes.
