Permissions Issues SPS 2003

For some reason the permissions seem to be screwed up on a portal
installation that I am working on. Although I have not made any
changes to the way that permissions are handled on the portal, there
seems to be an issue with them.

1.) When certain users come to the mysite area if they are not
admins they are not able to see the edit my profile link on the left
nav. I tried to go to mysite/_layouts/1033/settings.aspx and then
change the permissions for the site but when I go there I get
challenged for a password. What is odd about this is that I am a
local admin on the box. I even tried using the sharepoint admin and
SQL accounts they say access denied as well.
2.) I have an area under the portal that was created that
all "Domain users" or Nt Authenticated users should be able to
access on the portal. Both of the aforementioned groups have read,
wright, update, delete permissions (contributor which is the same as
the rest of the groups on here) but when they come to the area they
can't click the save button or anything to upload documents, save
and close on list items etc. This exact same functionality seems to
ber working fine for me.

Any suggestions I can expound if need be.

The first problem is probably a setting on each of the Profile Properties. Go to
Site Settings > Manage Profile Database > View Profile Properties
Edit User Profile Property and see if the "Do not allow users to edit this property" is checked for each of the properties listed.

The second issue your having is permissions, can you elaborate more on the group your users are in? Are they in an AD security group? Are they part of a custom site group?

Please read the previous posts, someone else has already recommended
that, but that's not the issue. The issue is now fixed and was
relatively simple and i can't believe I did not see it orginally. I
had not added the domain users into the members group of the portal.
SO they could not change personal stuff.

Its not, the allow users to edit these fields are enabled. The problem appears to be that the users don't have edit rights in there own my site or in the area off of the portal that i mentioned. The area off of the portal has the following permission. There is an AD group called Domain Users that all users are in. I have added this group with edit, delete, read, update access (contributor) to the site. However, none of those users can edit their info.

The main thing that worries me is that when I go to root/mysite/_layouts/1033/settings.aspx and try to go to any of the permissions areas I can't even log in as the sharepoint admin, sql, or my self (local admin on SP box). Maybe because this is the mysite area you can't get in, I don't know.
