I have a site collection administrator who has posed a question about
permissions. Basically he wants to know if there is a simple mechanism
to incorporate permissions as follows:

Staff - has access only to their documents

Plant - has access to all staff documents in their plant

Division Manager - has access to all staff documents and Plant documents

Corporate - has access to all Staff, Plant and Division documents for
all divisions.

The only method I know of is to place group permissions on individual
documents and then maintain the groups. Is there a better method?

If you keep them in separate libraries, then you won't have to maintain
permissions on specific items.

In this case custom permissions  would be the only way to do it. You could
make assignment of permissions automatic through the use of an event
handler. I've got a blog post here on how to do something similar. The
blog is based on setting permissions based on content type. You would just
need to change the logic of the permissions assignment.

I think this is what I am trying to do. I will have one of
my developers take a look and see what he can do.

Give your developer my email or this discussion list address if they have
any questions. The code shouldn't really be all that difficult given what
you've described.
