PDF icon

Asked By: Cara    Date: Dec 12    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1096

I have PDF files in doc libraries, and the nice little adobe icon
doesn't show up--we just have a little empty page icon. I thought that
was because we haven't gone through the process of adding the Adobe
support stuff to the boxes yet (I presume we'll need to do it on both
WFE servers). However I just noticed that when I look at the library in
datasheet view, the Adobe icon is there! Anyone have hints on how to
get it to show up in standard view? I'd prefer a solution I can use
from either central admin or the UI. If I have to get into the boxes, I
have request technical support and they're pretty busy right now.

You need to add a 16 x 16 gif file to the Template/images directory of
the 12 hive. Then you need to add an entry in the DOCICON.xml file
found in the Template/xml directory. Pattern it after one of the other
entries that load graphic files  based on a file extension. Then do an
IISRESET. The icon  should now show  up.

I was afraid of that. I have those instructions
from a blog I found, but I was hoping that since it's in there
already for the datasheet view, that wouldn't be necessary. Silly
thing for MSFT to make us fix.

As I understand it, Adobe won't give Microsoft the rights to distribute
their icon.

So just out of curiosity, why does it show  up when I look at the docs
in datasheet view?

I believe that the document knows what icon  to show  the same way that it
does in Windows Explorer.

It shows up in the datasheet view  because that is tied into the MIME
settings of your browser. When you installed Adobe Reader or Actobat on
your computer it added an Addin to Internet Explorer. The Icon in the
Datasheetview is rendered clientside. The one in the regular library  is
rendered on the server.
