path to wss default.aspx

I just got my Portal site up and running and have created a wss site
under the portal. I have a request from management to hide some of the
features that we will not be using. Needless to say, I am a newbie.

I have gotten as far as c:\program files\common files\microsoft
shared\web server extensions\60\template\1033\sts\default.aspx, but
when I open the page in Frontpage 2003, I do not see the page as
expected. I can identify the quick launch bar and some areas that
currently have data in them (when looking through IE6), but I need to
comment out some things such as Pictures and Contacts on the quick
launch bar and add a logo to the page. I will also want to comment out
some of the items in the title bar.

I have done this in Sharepoint Services, but am having difficulty in
Sharepoint Portal Server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You are looking at the direct-mode page that will be used to form the
plumbing and custom chrome for every default.aspx page for every site
created using the STS site definition. It contains the containers in
which the content will be placed at runtime. Quick Launch links will be
displayed in link bars whereas Web Parts will be displayed in Web Part
Zones.

This makes sense, but where is the default.aspx page that fills in the information for a standard OOB site?

Is there any references anywhere that can direct as to what page is what?

For the Quick Launch bar edits you need to edit the ONET.XML file. In the XML folder of the site definition you are working with locate and open the ONET.XML file. Within the NavBars element are child NavBar elements, the first being the top horizontal bar. The ones that follow are the Quick Launch items. Add/remove as need be and restart IIS for the changes to take effect.

As for the title changes, I would need more detail as to what you are trying to do. Some things you may be able to easily hide using CSS.
