Outgoing mail - Alternate for Exchange server

Can we use an alternative for exchange server for mailing and alerting in MOSS

For outgoing  mail such as alerting, you just need an SMTP service. You can
use Exchange or IIS for this, or you could set up a separate SMTP server. Be
sure to register your SharePoint IP address with the SMTP server  or your
mail will be rejected. Unless, of course, you have SMTP Forwarding set wide
open, which is not a good practice.

Receiving e-mail and enabling lists to use it is slightly more complex.

Also keep in mind that outgoing  mail from SharePoint is always sent
anonymous - if your SMTP server  requires authentication, you will either
need to setup an exception for your MOSS/WSS servers IPs, or use another
SMTP server as an "authentication relay".
