Organization Hierarchy in MySites

We have a custom app that populates user profiles with data from a

combination of sources, including AD and a corporate directory. When

populating the Manager profile property, we are using the user principal

from AD, but when a user browses to his Profile page, the Manager is not

shown in the Organization Hierarchy. If the user goes to the Details
page to

edit his profile, the Manager field is filled in and underlined as if it

recognized. If he clicks the Check Name button next to the Manager

and then saves the profile, the problem is fixed and the Manager is
shown in

the Organization Hierarchy. If I populate the Manager field with
domain\username instead of the user principal name (essentially the
email address), the Organization Hierarchy is built correctly. Any
