Opening Microsoft Word docs in Sharepoint

I was wondering if anyone knows... When users "open" (rather
than "save") a Microsoft Word doc in a Sharepoint document library, is
the document stored anywhere on the user's hard drive? Maybe in a
temporary folder or something?
