Opening DWG files in SharePoint 2007

Date: Nov 01    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1765

I am trying to get dwg files to open on a client site. Is there a way to use the
DOCICON.xml file to associate these files with an application? I see that most
of the file types use SharePoint.OpenDocuments as the value for OpenControl.

Here is a code snippet from DOCICON.xml:

<Mapping Key="mhtml" Value="icmht.gif" EditText="Microsoft Office Word"

I would think you might be able to specify something like

Or do I really need to buy third party software to do this?

Oh, you have run into the nightmare that started my blog. PArt of the problem
you are encountering is the fact that DWGTrueView doesn't work, especially if
you are in a SharePoint environment.

my blog is at http://slingeronline.wordpress.com

That lastlink is of particular interest to you I think.

I have read some on that blog! I do find that TrueView 2012 works, but the
client workstations all have TrueView 2008 on them.

The issues that I ran into frustrated me so much, that I quit working in the
engineering industry and I work at Idera now. The only thing that I can
recommend in retrospect is to suggest to your clients which products will and
will not work with your site. It's not a perfect answer, but it is something.

What do you do at Idera?????????????????

QA for some of their SharePoint products..............

My client uses Idera. I'm less than pleased with it.

I'm sorry to hear that. If you send me an e-mail off of the discussion group,
I'd be glad to discuss with you what the issues are. I may not have an answer
but I'm sure I can get the issue to someone who does.

I'm hoping to create a custom action and use the urlAction element to open the
dwg file in a third party app. Anyone done that?

More than 3 years ago, I was working at a company that wanted to do this very
thing (with SP 2007). It could not be accomplished by only mamaking a change to
the DOCICON.XML file. I ended up having to write a small ActiveX "shiv" to
invoke the client application. Then you have to modify the JS menu since "Open
in Microsoft Excel" and those are hard-coded in core.js (I think) and have the
respective CLSIDs embedded.

After doing all this I got it to work. But of course it is all non-supported as
far as MSoft is concerned. I can guess that the company had to throw my code
away for the new version.
