Opening Checked Out Document for Edit results in error

In my Document library on SPPS 2003, I checked out and then right
clicked to Edit it in Microsoft Word. However it came back with the
following error

"'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible
application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater."

Is it because my desktop is Windows 2000 with Office 2000 and not Office
2003 ???

What do I need to do ???

SPS 2003 was built with Office2003. Check out the document  and then try
double clicking the link and see if it will then open in Word.
