Open File Question

When I click on the Office button and select open, there are two places
that list SharePoint sites/documents. One is "My SharePoint Sites" and
the other is "My Network Places". The links in each of these places are
different.

Could someone please explain how these links get into each section and
what the difference is? And why not all sites or documents I have used
appear here?
