Office SharePoint Search Server error

Asked By: Tracie    Date: Oct 18    Category: MOSS    Views: 2565

I just added another server to our existing MOSS 2007 farm which
is intended to be a dedicated search/index server. It has a fresh OS
install and I performed a "Complete" SharePoint install which then
successfully joined the farm. The problem, however, is that when I
click start on "Office SharePoint Search Server" it throws an error...

"An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception
Information: Unable to connect to the remote server"

I am not seeing anything showing up in event viewer, and google did not
return much.. Any ideas? If I attempt to start this service on the
original box I setup the farm with (the one that has central admin
etc..) it works fine, but that's not where I want to host search...

Please verify the following: 1. The SSP application pool identitiy managing the
index is an administrator on the Index server2. The application pool identity
for Central Administration is an administrator on the Index server3. The SSP
application pool identitity is an Administrator on the server  hosting Central
Administration4. If query and index are seperate, be aware that all server farm
communication is via NETBios - so don't block ports.5. The Search service
account is an administrator on all servers in the farm If I think of something
else, I will send later.

I dont have an SSP configured yet since it requires an index server  and
this new box is supposed to be my index server. Per your suggestions, I
added the various accounts as administrators but no luck.

Anyhow, I just took a look at the logs in the 12 hive. It appears as
though its failing because the "Office Server Web Services" website
never got create on my new box following a "complete" install. Should it
not have been even though I joined the farm?

"Configuring the Search admin web service proxy Url to
'http://mynewbox.com:56737/SearchAdmin.asmx'", Unhandled page level
exception. Path: /_admin/SearchServiceInstanceSettings.aspx, Error:
Unable to connect to the remote server

It is trying to access a url which does not exist on my new box
(verified there is no service running on that port), but if i change the
hostname to the box running central admin it works fine, cuz the site
exists there...

I suppose I could manually create that site but seems like something is
missing here...

I would re-run the SharePoint Product Config Wizard - removing it and readding
it to the farm. Make sure you have IIS, .NET, .NET2, and .NET3 installed. Also,
all app pool identities must be local admin on every machine in the farm.

Otherwise, something looks wrong with the configuration database. This IIS
virtual server  should be instantiated automatically when adding the server to
the farm.

OH! And make sure Windows SharePoint Service Web appliction is running on the
Index server! This is what actually connects to configDB and creates your IIS
sites.

Yup re-running the wizard fixed it - not sure why it chose not to work
the first time.
