Office Icons missing in standard views of doc lib or web parts

The icons show up when viewing the doc lib in datasheet view, but not in the
standard view.
This is in MOSS 2007 on top of server 2008.

In addition, in datasheet view, the document name includes the file type, but in
standard view it doesn't.
I am sure the two issues are related, but I dont know how to fix them.
