Office Documents open slow

Asked By: Vaughn    Date: Jan 09    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 9342

I have an issue on my sharepoint installation. When I try to open a
word / excel document it takes forever, but mostly hangs. If I open a
PDF file it pops up quickly. Not sure what is causing this. OS is
server 2003, Office is 2003.

Have you tested opening the files on other user computers? It maybe an issue
with your client machine and not SharePoint.

checked the network traffic between the two? Office 2003 has extra hooks into sharepoint  that may be causing  this. Try theses tests:

> I’d first put one of the Office documents  that’s causing the issue  in a non-SharePoint web space and try to open  it (ideally from the same server… like create a subdirectory under the SharePoint site’s root, exclude the path, and try to open the document  that way, by browsing to it). This would remove SharePoint from the equation.

> Then I’d try right-clicking the Office document from the document library and doing a Save As and seeing how fast it is.

> Finally I’d try it on various PC’s… maybe even a clean install (VirtualPC is great for this).

If the first two tests are ok, I’d lean towards networking issues OR client install issues.

It doesn't seem to be a network issue  because I can copy the file  (1
meg) almost instantly from the explorer view to my desktop. It isn't
a file issue because I can open  the file fine after copying to the
desktop. By Client issue I don't know what you mean, but I have this
problem on several machines... So I am thinking it is a Sharepoint
issue with communication via Office. As I said in my previous post,
PDF files open fine through the sharepoint  sites, it is just limited
to Office 2003 apps.

Found out a small change. It seems the Sharepoint server was moved
to a different subnet. So we are connecting through a firewall /
VPN, but all ports are open  from here to there. Not sure why with
all ports open, only OFFICE doc's take forever to open. Again, have
no problem with PDF files. Anyone know why I would be having these
issues?

I found this answer and it solved all of our problems.
Switch off checkbox Automaticaly detect setting in IE8 / Tools / Internet Options / Connections / LAN settings / Automatic configuration. Then it is light speed again.
