Novice question regading Exchange 2000

We are going to install Sharepoint on a test basis. The
documentation makes reference to installing SPS on a server running
Exchange 2000 server. We will *not* be doing that.

What is the procedure regarding installing SPS on a server in the
same domain as an Exchange 2000 server? Does anything (a client type
service maybe) need to be installed on the Exchange server itself?
Can SPS in fact index the Exchange 2000 server in any way using this
configuration?

Installing Exchange 2000 and SPS is no longer supported by Microsoft on the
same machine. In any case you want to setup Sharepoint on its own server.

As per my knowledge, you can actually install them on same machine, but
provided that Exchange Server be the first one to be installed.

Install Exchange 2000 SP1 on Exchange Startard edition before you
install SPS.
NOT apply Exchange SP2 and SPS SP1.

Since Exchange SP2 and SPS SP1, SPS and Exchange are not supported on the
same machine. There is some serious performance and scalability issue so I
will NOT recommend sharing a box for SPS and Exchange
