Non-SharePoint Home page that links to default SP page

Is this possible? Anyone done anything like this?

I would like to have a normal every day HTML web page be the default page that
greets all visitors to our SharePoint site. We will have a login form on the
page that will pass their credentials on to the default SharePoint page to be
authenticated against. Is this mucking too much with the way SP wants things
structured?

Are you talking about Forms-Based Authentication?
