No way to specify a group in list's "Send Alerts To"?

It seems that only individual users can be added to the notify list? Can anyone suggest a workaround?

You could try using Active Directory Security groups or even Exchange distribution lists. You have to be aware that if you configure an Alert for a group  that only the user himself can change the alert settings there is now way to change the settings after configuring it (as far as I know).

I've had the best results using email enabled security groups!

When you create your security group  if you are using Exchange in your environment, you need create an Exchange address for the group. Then in SharePoint you should add this group as a member of a SharePoint group. And you can then select this group as an alert subscriber for the alert?
