Must files reside on SPS server to index, etc

Asked By: Darci Knowles         Date: Aug 15, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 190

I'll be adding a new server to our LAN for running SPS (v2 most likely).
If I want to make use of SPS indexing, document management, routing, and
collaoration features, will I need to move all of our existing files
(mostly Word docs) to the server running SPS?

The documents do not have to reside  on SPS. You can setup SPS to crawl
your file server  and index  the documents. But you lose the check-in,
check-out and versioning features  of SPS though.
