Multiple DNSes on the same SharePoint Server

Asked By: Coty    Date: May 03    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1623

I don't know a whole lot about DNS entries.

Is it possible to have more than one DNS on the same SharePoint server?
What all is involved? What are the implications as far as licensing are

For example, my client has their main intranet portal with SPS running
under the DNS http://intranet.companyname.com. The intranet is intended
only for employee use.

The company sponsors a series of events, and they would like to
advertise those events in an extranet fashion to their customers. Could
they set up http://events.companyname.com/ as a DNS entry on the same
server and run just WSS?

This really an IIS issue rather than SharePoint.
You can run multiple  virtual servers on IIS. Each will need it's separate
host header. Actually, for IIS, a host header is not required, but must be
unique for each virtual server. Something must be unique for each virtual
server, either IP address, port number or host header.
You may use the virtual servers for SPS, WSS or plain IIS sites.
