Multiple Category Properties / Drop-Down Boxes

Asked By: Nirmal    Date: Dec 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1670

Does anyone know of a way to set up multiple Category properties (separate
drop-down boxes) within a single document profile?

We have set up multiple categories and sub-categories within the portal to
provide users with multiple ways to search for documents within categories (i.e.
"Document Types" category, "File Types" category, "Topics" category, etc). Each
category could have many sub-categories underneath it. In order to populate the
categories correctly, a user is required to select a sub-category under each and
every category. That means if there are 3 categories, the user has to select 3
different category options in order for the document to appear under each of the
categories within a sub-category. Instead of
requiring the user to scroll through all those categories within one drop-down
category box, I would like to set up
a category selection for each category within the document profile using a
separate drop-down box for each.

For example, in order to publish a document the user needs to file that document
under 3 different categories. I would like a document profile selection to be
"Document Types" category and within that one drop-down box the user selects the
document type that best fits that document that they are trying to store. The
next drop-down box is labeled "File Types" category and within that one
drop-down box the user selects the file type that best fits that document that
they are trying to store. And the last drop-down box for that document profile
would then be "Topics" category and within that one drop-down box
the user selects the topic that best fits that document that they are trying to
store. Therefore, instead of the
user having to scroll through all the categories and sub-categories available
and be required to select 3 different
ones (all within the appropriate category), the user is now only selecting one
sub-category based on the specific
category addressed for each drop-down box.

My opinion is that you will have to build your own checkin page\webpart with
the mechanism you need. the only other way is to fiddle about with the built
in forms under the system folder of the workspace (and thats highly
unrecomended)

What I did when i had a similar problem was build a webpart with a revised
code of the category  tree-putting a checkbox beside each category on the
tree, thus allowin the user  to select multiple  categories from a treeview.
what you can do is just take it one step further and , since you want you'r
tree to show only one branch of categories, just change the ado query to
start from the category downwards.
