This may be a silly question, but what benefit does MSS 2008 offer to MOSS

The functionality of MSS is rolled into MOSS with the IU that came out some time
ago. I believe that all got rolled into SP2.

The MSS features were first introduced into MOSS with the Infrastructure Update.

The capability of MSS 2008 became available in MOSS 2007 with the infrastructure
update. The full UI came in with SP2. Its primary advantage is a better UI for
managing search and the introduction of "Federated Queries."
