Moving/Copying Sites and Areas

Asked By: Kari    Date: Oct 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 938

What's the best way to move an existing WSS Site to the Portal as a
new area/subarea?

I've seen some discussion of "smigrate", but I was wondering if anyone
had experience using that tool or another method for moving sites.

We have many instances when a customer will "test the waters" by
creating sites under WSS, then decide to move up to portal and they
want move the existing WSS sites up to the portal without having to
recreate areas or copy documents.

Unfortunately out of the box there is not a tool  that will perform this
type of migration from WSS site  to SPS area. You must manually move
the content within the WSS site to the new area. Nor SMIGRATE or
STSADM.EXE will not work when trying to migrate WSS to SPS area. To
the best of my knowledge I am not aware of a 3rd party that offers this
service. Maybe someone else has, in which I would be interested to
check it out.
