Remember one thing when you are doing Backup and
Restore in Sharepoint. Your SP and hot fixes should be
the same on both servers.

Microsoft has come up with lot of post SP1 hot fixes
for Sharepoint. If you have applied any of those hot
fixes on your old server  you will have to apply those
Hot Fixes on the new server.

Let me know if you need more information on this.

I ran into similar kind of issue with back up and restore.
Currently there are 3 service packs/hot fixes for SPS and WSS.
1.WSS service pack1
www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx\
-a1f5bfedf497&DisplayLang=en
2.SPS portal server  service pack1
www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx\
-8f5d8347e3d2&DisplayLang=en
3.Security update for WSS
www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx\
-55546b58a2f2&DisplayLang=en

Make sure that, you update your source machine with all these patches. Then
take a backup. Update the destination machine with these 3 patches. Restore the
portal then.
This process worked for me.

Not sure if my earlier message came through. But if you have installed
any hot fixes on the old computer and not installed hotfixes on the new
machine then your backup  and restore of Sharepoint won't work. You need
to have the same environment on both machines to make the backup and
restore work.

Let me know if you need more information.
